Effectively using Traffic Exchanges

by Chuck Pounds

Traffic exchanges, what are these? How are they used? What is their purpose? Can they be an effective tool for promoting my website(s)? Of course, the name says it all, Traffic Exchange. The basic purpose of these types of sites is to visit other websites to earn credits to promote your website(s). You view theirs and they will view yours. But it can be more than that, if you use them together with your promotions.

Now lets see, how do I get started? First, you want to investigate. One way is to try them out. But with so many out there (more than 500 sites) it would take you years to find out which ones work for you. I like to see how long they have been on the internet and how many subscribers their are. A good start is 20,000 to 50,000 subscribers, but what about 100,000 to 150,000 that you can promote to. When is the last time they updated? If you can't seem to locate this on the site, email them and ask.

Okay, so you found some that have a good subscriber base and been around. How about the exchange ratio. Does it seem fair? How many websites do you have to visit to have yours seen? A good ratio is a 1 to 1 exchange, but don't disclude the 2 to 1 exchanges, because this is not a bad ratio. Their are many different exchange ratios, use your own judgement. They may have other uses that you could benefit from. If they have a great subscriber base it may be worth checking out.

How about the terms and conditions? Everybody has rules that need to be followed, for a very good reason. Can you promote any site you want or do they have limitations on what you can promote? Of course you don't want to promote a site on baby clothes in the same place adult sites pop up. With a clear set of rules and categories to promote in makes for a better choice.

Now that you have chosen a few to work with, what do you do with them? Here's where the fun begins and excitement takes over. What you want to do is promote them on each other. Get subscribers of your own. This makes for a great list builder of contacts for you to email about other opportunities that may help them as well as you. Contact your subscribers and make a relationship with them to start off and then gradually introduce them to your promotions. If used correctly you can build a great network of subscribers.

Spend about four to six hours a week (about an hour a day) using your traffic exchanges to promote your website(s). You never know, you might find something useful to help you grow your networks. The most important thing for you to do is HAVE SOME FUN. It doesn't have to be dreadful or boring. Create some excitement and get people involved.

One way to get started is to search for advertising on the search engines for traffic exchanges networks. Another way is to view the few listed on this page.
